Socialist for US Senate Barred from the Ballot

Press release by Socialist Action CT dated October 2

With 56 nominating petitions still not returned by town clerks and numerous glaring errors in signature verification still outstanding, the Secretary of State’s office has sent a letter to Fred Linck, Socialist Action candidate for US Senate, rejecting his application for ballot status.

On September 12, campaign volunteers were shocked to find that 56 nominating petitions had still not been checked and returned by town clerks. Since then, volunteers have found dozens of voters’ signatures illegally ruled off in Hartford for being unaffiliated, dozens more illegally ruled off in New Haven and Bridgeport for being inactive, dozens of legible signatures ruled off in New London for being illegible, and many registered voters’ signatures incorrectly ruled off for being unregistered.

Corrections made to the most obvious violations to Hartford and New Haven brought Linck within 670 signatures from meeting the 7,500 needed for ballot status. Similar violations in Bridgeport have still not been corrected. “We have checked a sample of signatures rejected for belonging to unregistered voters against the voters roles, and found that about 20% do in fact belong to registered voters. At that rate, we should be able to find enough signatures in the remaining 4,000 that were rejected to obtain ballot status, probably even without the 56 missing petitions” said Linck. “We think voters would be shocked to learn how poorly their democratic rights are treated. Registrars of voters and town clerks have openly admitted to not knowing basic rules, to putting unqualified people in charge of verifying signatures, and to running only partial searches on voter names because full searches take longer.”

Fred Linck’s campaign will continue to fight for ballot status and challenge the violations of democratic rights committed in this process.

All Eyes on Columbia: We Must Build a National Campaign to Defend the Right to Protest for Palestine

After suspending and evicting students and ordering the repression of a student occupation, Columbia University has become the ground zero for attacks against the pro-Palestine movement. What happens at Columbia in the coming days has implications for our basic democratic rights, such as the right to protest.

Detroit Police Escalate Repression of Pro-Palestinian Protests

On April 15, Detroit Police cracked down on a pro-Palestine car caravan. This show of force was a message to protestors and an attempt to slow the momentum of the movement by intimidating people off the street and tying them up in court.

The Movement for Palestine Is Facing Repression. We Need a Campaign to Stop It.

In recent weeks, the movement in solidarity with Palestine has faced a new round of repression across the U.S. We need a united campaign to combat this repression, one that raises strategic debates about the movement’s next steps.

The Labor Notes Conference this year takes place right after over 100 students were arrested at Columbia for protesting for Palestine. We must use this conference to build a strong campaign against the repression which will impact us all if it is allowed to stand.

Since Monday, April 8, pro-Palestinian activists have been braving Germany's bleak climate — both meteorological and political — to protest the Israeli genocide in Gaza, and the unconditional German support for it.
