The 2022 invasion of Ukraine and the massive rearmament of Europe that followed mark a new stage in a growing conflict that has become a proxy war between the imperialist states of the US and NATO on one side, and an emerging alliance between Russia and China on the other. While some on the Left see this new pole of Russia and China as a check against US imperialism, neither country is anti-imperialist, and neither has anything progressive to offer working people.

The congressional intervention to bust a possible railroad strike with the complicity of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party was a blow to the labor movement as a whole and a wake-up call for the socialist Left in America. Indignation and denunciation are not enough. It is fundamental to break with the Democratic Party and build a party of the working class and for the working class that genuinely fights for socialism.

Republicans and Democrats are trying to win the working class vote on Tuesday, but neither party represents workers’ interests. Socialists must take advantage of the hunger for reform and fight for independent politics and build the party we need: a working-class party with a socialist strategy.

President Joe Biden gave a fervent speech on Monday justifying his decision to withdraw U.S. forces from Afghanistan to end the longest war in U.S. history. The speech was met with criticism from sectors of both capitalist parties who believe that the decision is a blow to U.S. credibility and power globally.

In the elections this weekend in Chile, voter turnout was low. Many people voted against the government and the political heirs of the dictatorship. Revolutionary workers had an impressive showing.

Whoever becomes president must manage an unprecedented situation amid increasing discontent with the regime.

The history of the New Anticapitalist Party in France, which coincides with a decade-long period of intense class struggle in the country, is instructive for revolutionaries in the United States seeking a path forward to building an independent working-class party that will fight for socialism. So too are the nature of the current crisis of the NPA and the crisis of leadership that Leon Trotsky wrote about in 1938.

Below we reproduce Left Voice editorial board member Jimena Vergara's speech from the Latin American and United States Conference which was called by the organizations of the Left Front in Argentina this July. More than 50 organizations from across Latin America and the United States participated. Vergara’s intervention was part of a panel on the global and U.S. situation.

Now that the movement has put the very existence of the police on the table, socialists everywhere must begin to think about the forms of self organization needed to further develop and strengthen the struggle in order to eventually build a broader confrontation with capital and the state.

On Wednesday, the mayor of Minnesota announced that Derek Chauvin --- the police officer that suffocated George Floyd --- will be charged with second degree murder, and that the other three cops who were accomplices of Chauvin will finally be arrested. This is an important victory for the movement; but these protests are unlike anything we have seen before and there is plenty of potential for continued unrest and resistance. 

The coronavirus has spread around the world through the circuits of capital and value chains, dividing the working class and putting millions of frontline workers at risk. Reorganizing the forces of the proletariat to respond to this threat is the only way forward. 

Multiple sources reported today that in Las Vegas, authorities have built a "shelter" for the homeless in order to respect "social distancing.” The images coming out of Nevada, however, tell an entirely different story.

On December 4, 1969, Chicago police fired about 100 shots into an apartment containing seven sleeping members of the Illinois’ Black Panther Party chapter. Mark Clark and Fred Hampton were killed.

This Friday in Santiago, Chile, tens of thousands of high school students, accompanied by teachers and workers, turned the city upside down to protest a rise in subway ticket prices. The right-wing government of Sebastián Piñera responded by declaring a state of emergency. Less than 24 hours later, the president was forced to revoke the increase.

The current crisis in Argentina is a consequence of the austerity policies imposed on the semicolonial countries by the IMF and imperialism.
