Biden tried to paint a picture of a United States that has come back stronger after the pandemic. But despite his populist rhetoric and laundry list of policies, none of these measures can address the real needs of the vast majority of the working class and poor who have been exploited and oppressed for much longer than the last two years.

The Biden administration called on Congress to undemocratically impose a contract on rail workers across the country and avert a nationwide rail strike. The deal has already passed the House with unanimous support from Democrats. This latest maneuver by a “proud pro-labor President” shows that there is no such thing: the state acts in favor of the bosses to protect their profits.

Speaking at Mar-a-Lago a week after the failed “red wave” of the midterms, Trump made an appeal to all those spurned by neoliberalism and feeling the effects of inflation to rally behind his xenophobic, transphobic, and pro-capitalist agenda.

This week, three weeks before the midterms, Biden proposed a cynical deal to those who want to defend abortion rights: if you get Democrats more seats in Congress, we’ll codify Roe. But restoring faith in the Democratic Party will not guarantee reproductive healthcare, fight the Far Right, or address the material needs of people feeling the effects of inflation. Working and oppressed people need their own solution.

Workers at the newly unionized Starbucks store on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, Massachusetts are on strike indefinitely to protest the company’s union-busting and harassment, and intimidation from their manager.

Organized by a coalition of socialist organizations, unions, and reproductive rights and housing groups, tens of thousands of people took their rage to the streets against the overturning of the constitutional right to an abortion.

In defending against the overturn of Roe v. Wade, we must also push for a national law that makes abortion access free, safe, and accessible to all. This will only be won through a movement organized in our workplaces, schools, and in the streets.

Build Back Better is dead at the hands of coal baron Joe Manchin. But this isn't just about Manchin — it's a about a Democratic Party that doesn't fight for working-class and oppressed people, and an undemocratic system that blocks even the smallest reforms.

Going to work should not be a death sentence. For workers at Amazon and a candle factory in Mayfield, Kentucky, going to work was a death sentence. Workers must fight for the right to a safe workplace.

Last week, the Biden administration announced that it was formally reimplementing the program after a decision by the Supreme Court. The new policy, negotiated with the Mexican government, will include new sectors of migrants in the program and expand to new cities along the border, putting thousands of migrants’ lives at risk. The decision shows that Biden is not just continuing but expanding Trump’s immigration policy.

In a recent opinion piece, former U.S. labor secretary Robert Reich argues that the September jobs report shows evidence of an “unofficial national general strike.” But that is a contradiction in terms.
