No to the sacking and black banning of the dockworkers of Union Nº2 of Mejillones

March 9, 2014

After the dockworkers’ strike, the attacks from the stevedoring bosses of Ultraport (owned by the Von Appen family) in Mejillones have not ceased.

This time they are attacking the workers’ organization and their union, Sindicato Número 2 Trabajadores Contratados y Eventuales Unidos (United Permanent and Temporary Workers’ Union Number 2) of Mejillones. More than 150 dockworkers have been laid off, and Ultraport are attempting to remove legal immunity from prosecution (desafuero) from union leaders like Enrique Solar “Mancha”.

In addition, Ultraport has drawn up a blacklist which, if endorsed by Mejillones Mayor Marcelino Carvajal, would prevent workers on this blacklist from getting any work in any industry in the city.

All of these measures aim to force back, criminalize and prosecute dockworkers, just as they do with the indigenous Mapuche people as well as students.

The signatories below say:

* No to the desafuero of union leader Enrique Solar “Mancha”
* No to the attack on union organizations
* For an end to the persecution and criminalization of the workers who took part in the strikes
* For the reinstatement of all Mejillones dockworkers who have been sacked or denied work. For full back pay for all dockworkers

The Movement for Palestine Is Facing Repression. We Need a Campaign to Stop It.

In recent weeks, the movement in solidarity with Palestine has faced a new round of repression across the U.S. We need a united campaign to combat this repression, one that raises strategic debates about the movement’s next steps.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson Has No Place at Labor Notes

The Labor Notes Conference will have record attendance this year, but it’s showing its limits by opening with a speech from Chicago’s pro-cop Democratic mayor, Brandon Johnson. Instead of facilitating the Democratic Party’s co-optation of our movement, Labor Notes should be a space for workers and socialists to gather and fight for a class-independent alternative.

U.S. Imperialism is Pushing Tensions in the Middle East to a Boiling Point

U.S. Imperialism's support for Israel is driving the tensions behind Iran's attack and the escalations in the Middle East. It is all the more urgent for the working class to unite with the movement for Palestine against imperialism and chart a way out of the crisis in the region.
