The Roma’s Tortuous Journey

The migration crisis has clearly shown the structural nature of racism and xenophobia in Europe. The Roma people are among the most oppressed in the continent; in France, there has been a rapid rise in anti-Roma racism, not only from right-wing groups, but also from the state and its institutions.

Calais: Refugees sew their lips shut in hopes of making themselves heard

Helplessly facing the inevitable destruction of their camp in Calais, eight refugees decided on Wednesday to express their profound distress by sewing their lips shut with wire and needles. On Thursday, nine other Iranian migrants repeated the operation in front of cameras and the French riot police, hoping to finally be heard by the entire international community.

Obama’s Crocodile Tears

Hardly a week into the new year and the Obama administration has made headlines in two ways. The first, is the ICE raids of Central American families’ homes, often in the middle of the night, detaining men, women and children in detention facilities. The second is the timid expansion of firearm regulation through executive action. Faster, more inhumane. This sums up the newest hardening of the asylum laws in Germany. But even that is not enough for the reactionary forces within the German regime. Deportations of refugees are supposed to be accelerated even further by installing so-called “transit zones” close to the borders.

New Mexican Ambassador will Continue the Country’s Subordination to the U.S.

On September 3, Miguel Basáñez Ebergenyi was confirmed as Mexico’s new ambassador in the US, with the blessing of US president Barack Obama. His appointment was proposed by Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto after the position had been vacant for 6 months.
