Police are Not Essential Workers

As most facets of daily life in NYC grind to a halt due to COVID-19, racist police violence against Black and brown New Yorkers on the subway continues. MTA workers who are organizing for their own safety in the face of high rates of infection could join those necessary calls to demands that would keep all New Yorkers safe. In the past week there have been two horrendous examples of police brutality on the subway. We do have the right to a clean and safe subway. The cops won’t help with that. 

Buenos Aires Subway Workers Strike Against Repression

After a month-long struggle the militarized police clamped down on striking subway workers in the tunnel and arrested 16 of them. In response to the government’s repression, subway workers called for an indefinite, city-wide transit strike until their fellow workers are released from jail.

The NYPD has been steadily ramping up police presence in New York City’s subways, claiming that they are trying to reduce fare evasion. Unsurprisingly, this increase in police has coincided with a rise in police violence and the persecution of working class people, specifically people of color.  Several incidents of excessive force against fare evaders have already been reported and, within the past few weeks, the police have begun to target churro and candy sellers on the subway platform–NYPD arrested  two people just last month. These attacks go hand in hand with earlier attacks by police on young black men.
