France: Day of Protests Against Labour Law

The ‘French Spring’ has begun. Students and young workers protested in cities across France on Thursday against the new labour law. The reforms make it easier to sack young employees. Over 150 k protested across France.

Secondary and university students called to demonstrate in the main French cities. Hundreds of high schools were closed due to the protests and UNEF (National Students Union) estimated that more than 150,000 protesters participated across France.

Thousands of students and workers gathered in the Place de la Bastille Square in Paris this afternoon, Thursday, for a long-planned demonstration against a new labour law, commonly referred to as the ‘El Khomri law’ after the French Minister of Labour, Myriam El Khomri. Neither dismissals nor job insecurity!

14:12. Paris. Students and youths marched shouting: “Hollande, you listen, we have taken to the streets!

14:05. Rennes. French Riot police clashed with students demonstrating against the changes to the labour law and fired tear gas on marchers in Paris and made some arrests.

14:00. Bourdeaux. French high school and university students attending a demonstration against the new labour law proposal, as part of a nationwide protest.

13:00. Rennes. In other cities thousands of French young people and trade unionists have held street protests to reject the government’s new labor changes.
