Jim Crow Joe and Kamala the Cop: Another Blue Lives Matter Ticket

Joe Biden ended months of speculation on Tuesday when he announced that Kamala Harris, the former Attorney General of California and current U.S. senator, would be his running mate. This choice is a blatant attempt to co-opt a movement against anti-Black police by nominating a Black woman who talks about racial justice. But, Harris is not only pro-cop and pro-prison. She is responsible for locking up and terrorizing communities of color.

U.S. Imperialism Boosts Military Spending Amidst Cuts for the Working Class

With the recent passage of the $741 billion National Defense Authorization Act and even greater defense spending through the Senate Republicans’ proposed coronavirus relief package, the U.S. has unprecedented authority to attack the working class here and abroad instead of providing pandemic relief.

Crocodile Tears and Rising Poll Numbers: The Democrats Doth Protest Too Much

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler was recently tear gassed by federal agents while marching with protesters. But Democratic Mayors are no friends of protesters. They are attempting to cynically position themselves as allies of the Black Lives Matter movement in order to co-opt it.

Cohering the Rebellions: For a Combat Party of the Working Class

Large sections of the socialist left --- in venues like Jacobin --- argue for channelling the ongoing rebellions against the capitalist state into electoralism and the Democratic Party. In the context of no-growth, predatory capitalism, this is utopian. We need instead a fighting, independent party of the working class to cohere the rebellions and to win power.

“We’re cherished friends, partners, and neighbors.” The Meeting Between Mexico’s López Obrador and Trump

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) ran as a progressive who would stand up to Donald Trump. He has spent his presidency betraying those promises. But the meeting last week was nonetheless a low point. We need an alliance between the Mexican working class and the Black community in the United States in the fight against racism.

U.S. Democracy Is Not Very Democratic

July 4 is the day when Americans are asked to celebrate the birth of American democracy; however, the little democracy that exists within the U.S. is tainted by compromises with and deference to the power of capital. The only path to a truly democratic way of life is through socialism.

The Minneapolis Uprising and the Heavy Stick of Reaction

The capitalist class maintains power by using a combination of “carrots” and “sticks,” reform and repression. In the face of the uprisings, this relationship is shifting. Are we witnessing the first stage of fascism?

The Pandemic and the Anti-Police Uprising Are Reshaping the Terrain of Class Struggle

A new period of class struggle is unfolding, marked by a shift to the left in the political situation, attempts to co-opt a disruptive anti-racist and anti-police movement, and two actors — the labor movement and the socialist left — that might come out of it much stronger if they rise to the occasion.
