Turning Pomp Into Protest
When people from outside the United States watch an NFL game, they are often confused by the patriotic displays before it starts. A giant flag as big as the field is unfurled, and for big events, military jets fly over the stadium (at tremendous cost) as the national anthem is sung. But there is only one country represented - the US. This is not a normal state of affairs, except on some occasions when national teams from two different countries are playing each other.
