Five Resolutions for the Socialist Movement in 2021

2020 was a year of upheaval, crisis, and struggle. 2021 will require the socialist movement to be strategic about how to go forward. Below, Left Voice offers five New Year's resolutions for the socialist movement in the U.S. 

Minneapolis Covered Up Recordings of Racist Cop Taunting Somali Teens

Recently-released recordings show a Minneapolis cop making racist statements and threatening the lives of four detained Somali teenagers. The city didn’t fire him until a year later, and it covered up its recordings of these events for six years.

Cultivating Organic Leadership: A Critique of Anarchism Within BLM

During the George Floyd rebellion, anarchist politics inspired a brand of "leaderless" organizing which was counterposed to the Democrat/NGO model of the "peaceful protest." While a horizontalist politics of revolt is a welcome departure from liberal moralizing against those who defend themselves against the capitalist state, it has proved insufficient to the historic challenges we face. Instead, socialists and anti-racists need to build democratic organizations that can formulate strategic perspectives and mobilize masses of people according to a common program.

Casey Goodson Jr., a 23-year-old Black man in Columbus, Ohio, is one of the latest victims of police violence. His killer, Jason Meade, was a cop for 17 years who shot Goodson Jr. in the back three times.

Obama said that we should steer clear of “snappy slogans” like "defund the police" because it alienates people. But that’s not what Obama’s statements are really about. Obama wants to co-opt and crush the BLM movement because he supports the police and the capitalist system it protects.

Two dozen Detroit activists received threatening text messages last night and this morning. The movement against racism will not be intimidated by such tactics. Left Voice stands with the activists against intimidation and repression.

Louisville Police Covers Up Child Sexual Abuse

The Louisville Police Department, made infamous for murdering Breonna Taylor, intentionally deleted 738,000 documents showing the extent of child sexual abuse within its ranks. The police continue to harass and abuse us — they must be abolished.
